Youth Center Volunteer Information

So you want to be a LAPD Devonshire PALS volunteer…

There are some things you need to know:

  • You must fill out an application, be fingerprinted and go through a background check
  • You must be interviewed
  • You must attend a volunteer orientation
  • You must love working with kids and other volunteers

    PALS Volunteers help in the following areas:

    Tutoring Assistant – A PALS tutor helps students ages 7-17 with their homework after school. The tutoring program is designed to help students accomplish their homework, study for tests, develop a love for learning and improve their academic performance.

    Playground Monitor – A PALS playground monitor supervises the kids during outside playtime.

    Arts and Crafts Teacher/Assistant – A PALS arts and crafts teacher assists kids during arts and crafts time. They can help plan and teach lessons or serve as assistants to the officer leading the class. This may include, but is not limited to, crafts, drawing, painting, cartooning, coloring, quilting, scrapbooking, and sculpting.

    Coach – A PALS coach or physical education assistant helps to coordinate or lead the physical education programs at the center. This may include, but is not limited to, Tae Kwon Do, soccer, basketball, fitness training, and drill team.

    Computer Monitor – A PALS computer monitor assists kids as they work on the computer. The computer lab at the center is designed to help students learn basic computer applications, conduct research, practice typing, play computer games and increase computer abilities.

    Fine Arts Assistant/Teacher – A PALS Fine Arts Assistant/Teacher helps to coordinate or lead the fine arts programs at the center. This may include, but is not limited to, dance, drama, song writing, music appreciation, music lessons, and concerts.

    Literacy Coach – A PALS literacy coach helps students develop in the area of reading. A literacy coach helps by reading to students and listening to students read out loud. This may be accomplished one on one or in a group.

    Event Assistance – A PALS event assistant helps with PALS events. This may include, but is not limited to, helping with invitation mailings, event set up, event planning, decorating, serving and event clean up.

    Office Assistance – A PALS office assistant is willing to help with general office work as needed. This may include, but is not limited to, data entry, answering phones, mailings, and covering the front desk.
